Tuesday, September 17, 2013 Recipe: Homemade Applesauce
6 cups apples—peeled, cored and cut into small chunks
¾ c. water
3 cinnamon sticks (or 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon)
1/8 tsp. ground cloves
½ c. white sugar
In a 2 quart saucepan over medium heat, combine apples, water, cinnamon sticks (or ground cinnamon) and cloves. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until apples are tender. If using the cinnamon sticks—remove them now. Use a potato masher to reduce chunks or put into a blender if you like smoother applesauce. Return to the pan if putting through the blender and stir in sugar. Simmer 5 more minutes to dissolve sugar. Can make larger batches to can or freeze as desired. Will keep for fresh use in the refrigerator for approximately two weeks.
**The amount of sugar may vary, depending on the sweetness of your apples and the amount of sweetness desired. Adjust accordingly. For best flavor, use 2 or more varieties of sweet apples.
