The herbal, earthy, lightly floral characteristics make Willamette one of the most used hops in America. Released by the USDA in the 1970's, it quickly became one of the most prolifically grown varieties and is still heavily use as an aroma hop. The quick growing vines can reach up to 20' when planted in a full sun locaton. They are easily trained on trellis; where the dark green, deeply lobed foliage makes for an attractive screen planting. In late summer vines bear cone-like flowers that have a pleasant pine-like fragrance. Harvest the flower cones when light and dry to allow for fullest flavor. Hand harvest is recommended the fifst year, but after that, vines can be cut 2-3' above ground level. Each winter, plants will die back to the ground.
