Corn, Sweet

Sweet Corn Culture, particularly for cool soil.

All sweet corn types need to be isolated from Field Corn, Ornamental Corn, and Popcorn. Cross pollination can occur resulting in a starchy kernel.

Plant corn in rows - at least 4 rows side by side for each variety to get full pollination. Plant rows 2 1/2 to 3 feet apart, spacing the seeds 4 to 6 inches apart; thin early varieties to 10 to 12 inches apart; later varieties 15 to 18 inches apart. Our seed is untreated, so be sure the soil has warmed up before planting to ensure good germination. Get a quicker start by boosting the moisture content of the seeds just before they are planted. Soak seeds in distilled water at 77º F for 16 hours, then dry at room temperature for 8 hours before planting. This results in earlier and better uniformity of emergence. A packet plants approximately 50-70 feet of row.
