Start seed indoors 8-10 weeks prior to last frost. Sow seeds 1/4" deep in a soilless medium like Jiffy Seed Starting Mix at 65° to 75°F and expect germination in 10-17 days. Seedlings can be transplanted to larger pots when there are at least two sets of true leaves. After hardening-off, transplant into the garden at a depth of 2" and 4" apart with 12-18" between rows. Mulch to keep rows weeded as shallots will not compete well. When tops begin to die back, pull and cure for several days out of direct sunlight.
